How to Play

Playing EuroMillions Plus is very similar to playing EuroMillions, but without the Lucky Stars. For an additional €1 per line, you can opt in to the Plus game when you purchase your main EuroMillions entries for the Tuesday draw, Friday draw, or both.

To add Plus to your ticket, you will need to select your EuroMillions numbers as usual and then tick the ‘Add EuroMillions Plus’ box located on the play slip. You will not need to pick any additional numbers, as those on your ticket are entered into both draws (with the exception of the Lucky Stars).

Five numbers are randomly drawn, with prizes awarded if your original EuroMillions numbers match three or more of the five ’Plus’ numbers drawn.

Predicting the Outcome of the EuroMillions Draw

You have to understand that probability theory is simply a reliable guide.  Naturally, the expected frequency and the actual frequency will not always match exactly.

You use probability to predict the future outcome of the game to guide you on how to play your game.

As a smart EuroMillions player, you don’t want to waste your money on patterns with low probability. That is the power of probability calculation as we apply it in EuroMillions.

As a lotto player, you want to win the jackpot. Therefore, you should stick with either 3-odd-2-even or 2-odd-3-even and forget about the rest of the patterns.

You get the same idea when it comes to low-high patterns.  You don’t want to pick a combination whose composition is purely low numbers or strictly high numbers.

However, EuroMillions is not only about low-high or odd-even patterns.

We discuss low-high and odd-even patterns to show that the lottery can be predicted to an extent.  But the low-high and odd-even patterns don’t provide the whole picture of the EuroMillions game.

You must understand the EuroMillions game as a whole if you want to win the game.  For you to achieve that, you have to understand intricate combinatorial patterns, which is the real key to EuroMillions’ success.

Let’s proceed to discuss what advanced patterns can do to level up your lotto playing strategy.

Combinatorial Patterns in EuroMillions

Let me describe a mathematical method that will catapult you to Euro Million’s success.  Deep within the finite sets of EuroMillions numbers are combinatorial patterns that should tell you the best combinations to play and the worst ones to avoid.

The image above describes the complete randomness of a lottery game. It shows that the lotteries are made up of independent random draws that, when put together with time, exhibit a mathematically deterministic behavior given the law of large numbers. Let me clarify that we don’t need statistics to determine the best combinations in a lottery game.  Statistics is not the right tool to analyze a lottery game.

So if statistical analysis will not provide the best clue, what will?

Well, since the lottery has a finite structure, any question that we ask is a combinatorial and probability problem to solve rather than statistical.

So instead of statistics, we need the concept of combinatorics and probability theory.   These two mathematical tools will help predict the general outcome of the EuroMillions game from the perspective of the law of large numbers.

This prediction is possible because a truly random lottery follows the dictate of probability.

Again, we can explain this better from the context of combinatorial patterns.

For example, we can ask:

“What is the probability that the next winning numbers will be 1-2-3-4-5?”

To solve this question combinatorially, we can rephrase the question this way:

“What is the probability that the next winning numbers will be three-odds and two-even numbers?”

Can you see it? Composition matters.

And the composition of a combination is best described using a combinatorial pattern.  You can look at combinatorial patterns in many different ways.  There are simple patterns and there are Lotterycodex patterns.

We will talk about Lotterycodex patterns later (you don’t want to miss this section).

How to Beat the Odds of the EuroMillions Game

Of course, you cannot beat the odds of EuroMillions.  But thankfully, math can help. There’s a way to increase your chances of winning the game.

The only way to increase your chances of winning is to buy more tickets.

But buying more tickets is useless if you’re making the wrong choices.  It’s not OK to choose 1-2-3-4-5, and 2-3-4-5-6, and 46-47-48-49-50.

I will explain why.

But first of all, I must ask you to forget about hot or cold numbers. For the longest time, people mistakenly believe that if a number frequently occurs in the past, the same number is bound to be drawn more often in the future.  This belief must be corrected.

Now, let’s proceed.

All combinations in EuroMillions 5/50 have the same probability.

It means that 1-2-3-4-5 is equally likely.

Play 2-4-6-8-10, and that is equally likely too.

Perhaps your combination is 5-10-15-20-25, this combination has the same probability as any other in the universe of Euromillions’ possible combinations.

The truth, all combinations have equal chances.

But think about this.  Consider more tickets where all numbers are picked in the form of straight combinations:

  • 1-2-3-4-5
  • 2-3-4-5-6
  • 3-4-5-6-7
  • 46-47-48-49-50

If I ask lotto players to spend their money on the above combinations, the surest response I will get is “no way.”

And why not?

That’s because people don’t trust their understanding of probability.

“Gut feeling” dominates the logic

You see, if you are confident that all combinations have the same probability, why be afraid to play all those combinations.

In other words, while you believe that all combinations have the same probability, there’s part of you that says buying “multiple tickets where all combinations are straight numbers” cannot be right.

But gut feeling shouldn’t be superior to mathematics.

If you want to win the EuroMillions game, you have to have a strong mathematical foundation.

And mathematics says:

There’s a big difference between having lots of wrong combinations and having the right combinations.

February 2020 — Changes to the Jackpot Cap

On 1st February 2020 a number of changes were made to EuroMillions and the jackpots on offer. The changes were implemented to help jackpots grow bigger and faster than under previous game rules, without an increase in ticket price or the number of balls to choose from. In addition, the new prize structure meant that the average number of Superdraws taking place each year would increase.

The Jackpot Cap, which stood at €190 million since January 2012, increased to €200 million, with the potential of climbing further to €250 million in future. Read more about the EuroMillions jackpot cap changes from February 2020.

January 2012 – Change to Jackpot Cap

On 12th January 2012, the EuroMillions jackpot cap was frozen at €190 million. Previous rules set in 2009 stated that each time the jackpot cap was reached, it would be increased by €5 million. The last cap increase had taken place in July 2011, when Scottish couple Colin and Chris Weir won a capped €185 million (£161.6 million) jackpot – the largest lottery prize ever won in the UK at the time.

A second rule was changed alongside the jackpot cap; the top prize could remain at its maximum size for two draws, instead of one draw, before being rolled down to the next prize tier.

Why Prizes Differ Between Currencies

The Euro is the base currency for EuroMillions as it is used by seven of the nine participating countries. When a jackpot is won in the UK the equivalent figure in pounds is paid out, based on the exchange rate on the day of the draw.

For non-jackpot prizes, the amount you receive in the UK is not worked out purely on the basis of the exchange rate. Instead, a formula is in place to take into account each country’s contribution to the game.

Each country that participates in EuroMillions contributes €1.10 into the Common Prize Fund, which is used to pay out prizes to all winners. Camelot’s contribution to the Common Prize Fund is the 50% of £1.74 from every EuroMillions ticket sold.

If, using the exchange rates on the day of a draw, Camelot’s contribution to the Common Prize Fund works out at less than €1.10, prizes paid out to UK players will be reduced to compensate for the shortfall. Q: Where are the Plus numbers on my EuroMillions ticket?
A: The five main numbers you enter in the main EuroMillions draw are also used as your EuroMillions Plus numbers. Your ticket will have ‘PLUS YES’ printed on to confirm that your numbers have been entered into both draws.

Q: When do ticket sales close?
A: If you are playing online, entries close at 7:25pm every Tuesday and Friday. If you’re playing instore, it’s 7:30pm.

Q: Are the Plus results the same as the EuroMillions results?
A: No, EuroMillions Plus is a separate draw to EuroMillions and therefore has different winning numbers — however your chosen EuroMillions numbers are entered into both games when Plus is played.
